FREE THE MEDIA!

In a recent turn of events, Moses Kuria, the cabinet secretary for ministry for investment, trade and industrialization verbally attacked (NATION MEDIA GROUP) using foul and crude language which was shocking, primitive and inexcusable in the eyes of level headed Kenya’s who expected cabinet secretaries to conduct themselves with decorum befitting their high office.

 Media is supposed to inform but the cabinet secretary vowing that he will not allow any Government to advertise with Nation media simply because what they broadcasted targeted to unveil his fishy acts and him declaring commercial war on the media house sends a chilling messages to journalist and media organizations, creating an atmosphere of fear.

 These statement have raised concerns among many citizens, who worry that they could undermine the principal of free speech and free press.

It is important to remember that free press is essential to a healthy democracy. without a free press, citizens would be unable to access the information they need to make informed decisions, and would be unable to hold their leaders accountable. When leaders criticize the media, they risk eroding public trust in this essential institution, and may even be seen as attempting to silence dissenting voices.

It’s also important to remember that respectful dialogue and constructive criticism are essential to building strong relationship between leaders and the media. By engaging with the media in a way that is transparent, honest and respectful, leaders can help to build trust with the public, and foster a culture of mutual respect and understanding that is essential to a healthy democracy.

In the end, it’s up to leaders to decide how to approach the media. But we as citizen, we should remain vigilant in protecting the principals of free speech and free press, and holding our leaders accountable for their actions. Only by working together can we build a stronger, more resilient democracy that serves the needs of all citizens.
