Nelson Mandela was right when he stated,” Education is the most powerful weapon you can utilize to transform the world”, yes, the solution to any issue lies in education. Education is essential if you want to progress and succeed. 

The presidential working party on education Reform in Kenya was appointed by H.E the president William Samoei Ruto, through a Gazette Notice No 11920 0f 30th September 2022, the presidential working party on education reform seeks views from the members of the public and other sector stakeholders to inform its terms of the reference with respect to reform the education sector in Kenya. The reforms have now made tremendous recommendation including the scrapping of the categorizations of the secondary schools and the removal of the compulsory subjects in line with the career pathways of learners.

Purpose and motivation go hand- in-hand, and according to a 2012 study, young kids who completed mandatory reading logs turned into desultory readers compared with students who logged their progress voluntarily. This basically reveals when students shift from assigned reading to choice reading, there was “increased reading volume, a reduction in students failing the state test, and the changes in peer relationships, self-regulation and conceptions of self”. Therefore, choice can be a powerful motivator. Having a clear career plans is associated with graduate’s positive career outcomes, so it important for higher education institutions to find ways to support students career decidedness and decision-making.

The reforms made have both negative and positive side but what we need is “OPERATION OKOA MASOMO,” where the team proposed lowering of entry grades to teachers training colleges from C+ to C with exceptions to marginalized regions whose entry grade will be further lowered to C-. on middle level training, the team proposes the establishment of more learning institutions from ward, constituency and county level followed with commensurate funding and hiring of more stuff.

Proposed education reforms also wants the government to establish a national polytechnic in every county, Technical vocational college in every constituency and vocational training center’s in every ward. Recruit an additional trainer, at least 50% at the onset and the reminder in a phased approach to resolve the staffing shortage in TVET institutions.

On TVETS, the task force proposes an increase in resource allocation to the sub-sector in line with trends in enrolment to cater for expansion of physical facilities, training equipment and the ICT infrastructure.
